Land to the left of this field (above) may be bought from the farmer as an extended burial ground for St Mary’s, Muker, in Swaledale in Yorkshire. A series of deaths in the area last year means that there is space for only six more graves. Part of Swaledale is called the Corpse Way, from times before St Mary’s was built 350 years ago, when the dead were carried in wicker baskets for three days — including numerous stops at inns — to the nearest consecrated ground, at Grinton. The Revd Caroline Hewlett, Vicar of Swaledale with Arkengarthdale (below, in St Mary’s churchyard), has asked a group of farmers to find a suitable burial site
