THE VEN. MARK WILSON

01 November 2013

David Green writes:

THE Ven. Mark Wilson, Archdeacon Emeritus of Dorking, died on 5 October, after being diagnosed four-and-a-half years ago with a brain tumour. He was 67.

Mark's ministry touched many people in Guildford diocese, since he served as a curate at Ashtead, Chaplain of Epsom College, Vicar of Christ Church, Epsom Common, Rural Dean of Epsom, Archdeacon of Dorking and Warden of the Community of St Peter, Woking. His funeral was held on 18 October at Guildford Cathedral.

The Bishop of Dorking adds: Although I had known Mark for more than 30 years, we really got to know each other when he and I began together as part of the new Bishop's Staff Team, established in 1996 by Bishop John Gladwin. Mark brought a great sensitivity and pastoral heart to his work as Archdeacon of Dorking. His interest in the ministry of healing, and in holistic psychotherapy, showed someone who could understand the different and difficult circumstances that people often find themselves in.

His survival, and his attitude to his own illness over these past four-and-a-half years, revealed that this was a man of deep faith and spiritual resonance. He has been an example to us all. May he now be fully aware of that wholeness that faith in the Lord Jesus brings.
