Smoking barrier: the Greek Orthodox Church of Hagia Triada is
framed by a burning barricade during clashes in Taksim Square,
Istanbul, on Tuesday. Hundreds of protesters clashed with riot
police, who fired water cannons and tear gas. The protesters have
accused the Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, of becoming
increasingly authoritarian, and attempting to impose Islamic values
on a secular state. Mr Erdogan has said that the protesters are
seeking to harm Turkey.
