Arrangements in hell

From Mr Christopher Wain

Sir, - Paul Vallely should note that Dante's hell (Comment, 10 October) has nine circles, not seven, and it is only the last three that are subdivided. The Usurers are in the seventh - but, yes, they are lower than the Violent against their Neighbours. In the lowest circle of all, the ninth, Satan devours Judas, Brutus, and Cassius - the three who committed the ultimate treachery to their respective masters. But I suppose we read the Church Times for guidance on the route to heaven rather than for the geography of hell.
