IT REALLY does look like the draughtiest and most inhospitable
place to sleep, even though it is under the shadow of the wings -
of a Vulcan bomber. Fortunately, the Revd Dick Bradshaw tells me,
it was a relatively mild night when he and others from his parish
of Monkwearmouth, in Durham diocese, did the
sponsored sleepout in aid of Centrepoint's purpose-built new hostel
in Sunderland.
Not all of them were brave enough for the concrete of the runway
at the Sunderland Aircraft Museum. Some were in cardboard boxes, or
sheltering in one of the buildings. But Mr Bradshaw, who is Team
Rector of the parish, and the others with him under the bomber,
were "very well-prepared, with about ten layers", and managed
something of a night's sleep. They raised £400 between them.
