Obituary: Helen Lee

21 February 2014

A correspondent writes:

HELEN LEE, evangelist, who died on 14 January, aged 90, began to share her faith publicly with her contemporaries as a student, then Helen Lyth, in Cambridge in the early 1940s. There she also metand married the Revd Bill Lee,who was serving his second curacy, in St Paul's Church. They started their married life in St Giles's, Matlock Bath, and then moved to St John's, Deptford, London. Helen was a busy vicar's wife as well as a mother to Nigel and Brigid.

Many people have happy memories of church house parties that Helen not only organised, but did most of the catering for as well. From Deptford, Helen and Bill moved to Christ Church, Chislehurst, in 1961. Their ministry in Chislehurst continued until 1976. Helen, at this stage, managed to write several books that were published by Falcon Press, mainly on the subjects of raising children, Christian marriage, and using one's home for the Lord.

During these years, she also helped out as assistant missioner for university missions, with the Revd Dr John Stott and the Revd David Watson, and many have told me how they came to faith through her help. She had a national teaching ministry, especially with Christian Viewpoint, and was also involved for many years with the Church Pastoral Aid Society. She had a very winsome and enthusiastic style of preaching, and a great sense of humour.

Her energy and commitment was amazing, and this she carried on into retirement years in Wensleydale, Yorkshire. Besides being seen walking her dog, riding her horse, preaching up and down the Dales, at Methodist chapels and Anglican churches alike, she had a great commitment to home Bible-study groups, which she carried on taking well into her eighties.

Helen was predeceased by Brigid, Nigel, and then Bill, and the last four years of her life were spent in Leamington Spa. She had four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren (another one is expected in March). She was affectionately known as "Henni" by them all, and she will be greatly missed.
