Archbishop of Uganda criticises Pilling
report
THE Archbishop of Uganda, the Most Revd Stanley Ntagali, has
used his Christmas message to condemn any move by the Church of
England to bless same-sex relationships. Responding to the Pilling
report (News, December 6),
Archbishop Ntagali said that he would resist such blessings and
would "stand with those in the Church of England who continue to
uphold the Bible as the Word of God and promote Biblical faith and
morality".
Former Nigerian Primate released after
abduction
THE former Primate of Nigeria, the Rt Revd Peter Akinola, was
freed by police after being kidnapped by armed gunmen last week.
Bishop Akinola was reportedly abducted on Christmas Eve, at about 3
p.m., in Abeokuta, in Ogun State, but was rescued by police
officers just hours later. The Archbishop of Canterbury later
welcomed his release in a message on Twitter, saying that he was
"relieved that he is safe".
Ugandan bishop praises anti-homosexuality
law
A UGANDAN bishop has thanked the country's parliament for
passing the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which proposes punishing those
in same-sex relationships with life in prison. The Bishop of
Namirembe, the Rt Revd Wilberforce Luwalira, welcomed the passing
of the Bill on 20 December in his Christmas sermon at St Paul's
Cathedral, Namirembe. It has yet to be signed into law by President
Yoweri Museveni.
MP urges release of Aasia Bibi
THE Conservative MP for Gillingham and Rainham, Rehman Chishti,
has called on the Pakistani government to release and pardon a
Christian woman who has held on death row since 2009. Mr Chishti,
who was born in Pakistan, said in a parliamentary debate on the
persecution of Christians earlier this month that Aasia Bibi, who
was sentenced to death for allegedly blaspheming against Muhammad
in 2010 (News, 19 November
2010), should be immediately set free.
