Paying tribute: stamps honouring some of Britain’s greatest humanitarians have been published by the Royal Mail. They feature the chocolatier and philanthropist Joseph Rowntree, a Quaker; Sue Ryder, who set up homes for the sick and disabled; and Eglantyne Jebb, founder of the organisation that became Save the Children. Also featured are Sir Nicholas Winton, known as “Britain’s Schindler”, after he saved the lives of hundreds of Jewish children during the Holocaust; the Nobel Prize-winning scientist Lord Boyd Orr; and the women’s-rights campaigner Josephine Butler. The managing director of consumer and network access at the Royal Mail, Stephen Agar, said: “These six British individuals remain inspirational . . . It is timely that Royal Mail pays tribute to their humanitarianism with these stamps”
