HIS MAJESTY the King has completed his work of disowning on behalf of his House and Realm his connexion with Germany and the Germans. He began with purging the Most Noble Order of the Garter of all enemy knights. Then he gave English titles and surnames to princes and princesses of German origin being loyal British subjects. Now he has assumed the family name of Windsor in place of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, which he inherited from his royal father, and relinquishes and discontinues “the use of the degrees, styles, dignities, titles, and honours of Dukes and Duchesses of Saxony and Princes and Princesses of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and all other German degrees, styles, titles, honours, and appellations”. We may now say without disrespect to the reigning House that we always disliked the aforesaid German styles and appellations, and are thankful to see the last of them. Our native Princes and Princesses will henceforth, we trust, find wives and husbands without any reference to the Almanach de Gotha, and without inquiring too closely into the number of quarterings their armorial shields contain. The security of our Royal Family will depend in the near future on its contracting no new foreign taint. We are casting no slight on our Allies, who, we venture to think, will appreciate the point that an infusion of British blood into our dynasty will best promote and maintain its vitality, and also prevent those unpleasant complications that result from close intermarriage among royal and princely Houses.
