Photo story: Ancient and modern

Meadow Arts

Two works by Shropshire-based artist Oliver Jones are on display at Pershore Abbey until the end of the month. Divine (above) and #motherandchild (below), echo certain forms of religious art and examine contemporary issues such as body image, the impact of social media, and the link between self-image and self-worth. The images are hyper-contemporary, but borrow from art history, employing techniques and compositions that have been used over centuries. #motherandchild depicts a woman tenderly holding her baby, in a scene lit by her mobile phone. The monumental triptych Divine is reminiscent of a religious painting or altar piece, while also referring to trends for tattoo and extreme body modification procedures
