People pay their respects to the former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was shot last Friday, as his body leaves Zojoji Temple in Tokyo, on Tuesday. The man suspected of assassinating him, Tetsuya Yamagami, told police that he blamed the religious group, the Unification Church, with which Abe was connected, for his mother’s financial troubles. Archbishop Isao Kikuchi of Tokyo recalled the Pope’s meeting with the Japanese government and diplomatic corps in Tokyo in November 2019, and said that Mr Abe “had made every effort to foster the Pope’s visit to Japan, which conveyed the message ‘Protect all life’”. USPG posted on Twitter: “Our prayers are with the people of Japan and our brothers and sisters in the Anglican Church in Japan as they respond to this shocking news”
