The Episcopalian Bishop of Michigan, the Rt Revd Bonnie Perry, speaks against gun violence at a news conference organised on Wednesday of last week in Lansing, the state capital, by End Gun Violence Michigan. A total of four Bill packages have been introduced by Michigan House and Senate Democrats, under three main categories: legislating to close the private-sale loophole; secure-storage law; and “red flag laws” which allow courts to remove firearms temporarily from those deemed to pose a threat. “Gun violence is now the number-one cause of death for our children,” Bishop Perry said. “After so many years of waiting and begging and sharing stories, we are finally going to have hearings on gun-violence Bills that will save lives.” A person is killed with a gun every eight hours in Michigan; and, every two hours, a person is injured in a non-fatal gun incident, a study by the Center for American Progress reports. The five Episcopalian dioceses of Pennsylvania are also involved in interfaith campaigning for gun-law reform, most recently a rally on 6 March inside the State Capitol, in Harrisburg
