A NEW Memorandum of
Understanding has been agreed between the Church in Wales and the
National Society.
The document, signed by the
Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, and the general secretary of
the National Society, the Revd Jan Ainsworth, confirms the National
Society's support for church schools in Wales, and its backing for
the aims of last year's Church in Wales education review.
It also acknowledged the
potential imbalance in the allocation of resources between the two
provinces.
The National Society's
deputy general secretary for Wales, the Revd Edwin Counsell, said
that the memorandum recognised organisational divergence in the
English and Welsh education systems, after Welsh devolution in
1998. The 165 schools in Wales were a distinctive Christian force,
and the memorandum would encourage the schools and their staff.
The Bishop of St Asaph, the Rt Revd Gregory Cameron, Bishop with
responsibility for education, said that the support of the National
Society would strengthen Church in Wales schools.
