Fraudulent appeals

by
17 June 2016

A CLERICAL correspondent warns that scam letters, as reported in the Church Times (News, 27 August 2004) are occurring again.

He received a plausible handwritten letter, ostensibly from a young woman needing a large sum for training at an Institute whose address was a PO box in Uganda. No trace of the institution was found online. The letter bore the hallmarks of the previous scam, using Crockford details: it addressed the cleric in both his Christian names, and gave a typical catalogue of heart-rending family tragedies. At least one member of the Church Times staff has recently received a similar appeal at his private address, evidently using another directory.
